  • Issue 2: Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy
Vitamin D is a potent hormone that has a single endocrine function, the regulation of serum calcium levels. The kidney converts 25OHD3 and 25OHD2 into 1,25(OH) 2D3 and 1,25(OH)2D2, which then act both directly and indirectly to maintain serum calcium levels. The enzyme that converts 25OHD to 1,25(OH)2D2 (activated vitamin D, the steroid hormone) is present in a variety of tissues, which gives rise to vitamin D’s multiple autocrine functions.
